Tutorial Screen Redesign‌

Problem Statement

There's a pop-up screen athat ppears whenever players unlock a new‌

blocker in Candy Crush Saga. While it works well for early‌ levels with simple game elements, it becomes less effective as‌players progress and encounter more complex mechanics.‌ These advanced game elements often require more explanation,‌ which makes the descriptions long and difficult to read.‌

My role as Content Designer

- Partner with the Game Designer to define communication‌ goals, ensuring ‌ alignment between gameplay and player understanding.‌

- Translate these goals into a content strategy that meets players’ needs, making tutorials more intuitive and engaging.‌

- Support UI Designer in translating the content strategy into visuals that complement the UX copy

- Collaborate with UX and UI Designers to design a new tutorial‌ screen format that improves clarity.‌

Solution

- Working with the UX and UI Designers, we redesigned‌ the tutorial screen to make information easier to digest

- Information is chunked into short points, so players can quickly grasp the gist while scanning.

- The image on the left illustrates the UX copy on the right, reinforcing player understanding.

- Points are modular and flexible, ranging from a minimum of 1 to a maximum of 3.

Impact

- Tutorial copy focuses on action and consequence, helping players understand how to interact with blockers and achieve the level goal.

- Key keywords are bolded using markup, making critical information stand out at a

glance. This is further validated by user interviews which revealed that highlighting the keywords help players to recall the information

- Easier UI implementation due to the modular nature of the body copy
